RV-10 #40237 - Fuselage Construction - Cowling Hinge Pin Retainer

First  |  Previous Chapter  |  Next Chapter  |  Project Home

At Osh '07 this year, I spent a lot of time looking at how various builders managed the cowling side hinge pin on the standard cowling. For a brief moment I considered Camloc (or Millspec) quarter turn fasteners, however in addition to those fasteners being really expensive (the cowl side only kit is $200), I think the RV looks much better using the hinges rather than using Camlocs. However, I did choose to use the Camlocs on the bottom cowling rather than the hinge pins. Since I would be using the hinges on the side, I looked for an elegant way to "manage" the hinge pin release point. The standard Van's solution is effective, but could be improved.

Here are some great (and not so great) ideas on how to manage the hinge pin retainer.
